Tower Challenge...Mr. Newman
Mr. Newman, 8th grade science teacher, shared with MPEF what he and his students were able to accomplish with his brain strong award!
"Here are a couple of pictures I took of my students doing a project called the Tower Challenge. This project was funded by the MPEF:) In science, we are studying Plate Tectonics. As part of the unit, they had to build a tower out of paper clips, straws, string, cardboard and pins to support weight (sandbags) and withstand an 'earthquake'. The towers in the photos are on a shake table that I constructed that simulates the back and forth, up and down shaking of a real earthquake. The students in groups of 4 are given a budget of $50,000 to buy their materials. The group that can build the strongest and least expensive tower wins. These two groups pictured were top contenders. This is just one of the many hands-on/inquiry labs our 8th grade students have been able to do thanks to the MPEF! You are awesome!!!!!!!"
